Handling & Maintenance
Handling & Maintenance
- The paper is made of 50% cotton, which naturally absorbs oils. To maintain its performance, avoid touching the paper too much while working, as oils from your hands may reduce its absorbency.
- This sketchbook is designed for mixed media and are best suited for light watercolor washes rather than heavy applications. Excessive water may seep through the pages. Allow each layer to fully dry before adding more paint.
- These sketchbooks feature a sewn binding with a convenient lay-flat design. With frequent use, the center seam may begin to split. While this might look unsightly, it will not affect the durability of the sketchbook, as the binding is securely sewn. If needed, you can easily repair the spine using pH-neutral bookbinding glue. We are continually working to improve our design to address and overcome this issue.

A closer look at the finer details

This sketchbook is so obviously created by a fellow artist--every detail has been so lovingly thought out. The cloth cover, the subtly shimmery embossed title of "Drawing Diary" instead of "Sketchbook" so enchanting, complete with a pale pink ribbon to hold your place. But what matters most to me is the quality and substance of the pages themselves and this sketchbook delivers. I purchased this intending to use it for gouache painting and the paper held up fabulously, not becoming wavy once water was introduced. I used washi tape for my edges and the tape was able to peel off without lifting paper (AMAZING). I LOVE that the paper is square as that is my personal preference for creating works (makes it so easy to share on social as well, a bonus) Most impressively to me is that the book lays totally flat and the paint isn't visible from the other side, so I can create works on BOTH sides of the page. All together, aesthetically this book is so magical I feel inspired to fill up every last page.

What I love most is the size. It's just... perfect! I don't know why, but it's quite handy for drawing people or landscapes. I have been looking for a square sketchbook, but they always come a bit small. The 7 by 7 inches size is just right for drawing something that isn't too small to color with gouache—usually, when things are small, I just use colored pencils. The quality of the paper is great! The texture is smooth, so I can easily scan my drawings and digitalize them. It's thick enough for multimedia use. What's more, this sketchbook can lie flat without any problem, which makes drawing on it so enjoyable!

I used to paint on 300gsm 30% cotton paper. It didn't show the pencils details so I initially thought it was bcoz of the paper.
Then I shifted my paper to a 400 gsm acrylic paper with very little texture!! But same issue I faced!!
By seeing your artwork with tiny people with the tiny face details you are able to achieve, I was so fascinated and I tried it on my paper but I couldn't make it happen!! So I decided my pencils were the problem 😂 . It won't take layers of pencil on pencil on my paper.
But after trying your drawing diary I feel like I am in heaven. With right quality of paper and very good texture to take the pigment in, I can easily layer my pencils details now very well. Now the paper makes all the difference 😂 .
Excited for new sketchbooks from you!!

BTW I tried your sketchbook today. I was afraid to try it because it's so pretty and full of blank pages. But I love it. The water sits on top enough (of the paper) that it creates lots of watery marks and I love that about watercolor. There isn't much in the way of 50% cotton in the market and I think you might be onto something…

The Story
Elaine Lee (aka dearelaineco) is a mixed media artist, designer, and teacher, who has tried countless sketchbooks over the years but never found the perfect one. Most had uninspiring covers and lacked the right paper for mixed media work.
So, she set out to create a sketchbook that was not only beautiful enough to display on a bookshelf but also practical enough to take anywhere.
And that’s how the Drawing Diary Sketchbook was born. After a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2024, it sold out multiple times and is now finally back in stock!

Made in China
The story of paper and painting in China is pretty amazing, with a history stretching back over a thousand years. It all started during the Han Dynasty when a court official invented paper, transforming how the world could capture ideas and express creativity. This led to the beautiful tradition of Chinese brush painting, which is still admired today.
Generations later, my grandparents passed down their love for this art form, inspiring me to appreciate art materials that are carefully crafted.
Today, I’m honored to work with Chinese artisans to create our sketchbooks, celebrating our shared heritage and the love for craftsmanship that has traveled across time and continents.
